Paralympics and Olympic star Oscar Pistorius has been arrested on the charge of murdering his girlfriend in one of the most shocking scandals in recent times. His girlfriend was found shot and killed at his Pretoria home and the neighbours have reported the sound of gunshots and repeated domestic quarrelling beforehand. The death of Pistorius’ model wife, Reeva Steenkamp, has stunned South Africa where he is considered a national icon.
Known as the “blade runner” because of his speedy running with his prosthetic legs, he has been named as one of the most sportspeople in the world. He ran with prosthetic legs because he was born without a fibula in both legs and had to have his legs amputated at a young age. He was the first runner with prosthetic legs to run in the Olympics as well as the Paralympics – he dominated sprinting events in the latter.
Police were called to his home in Pretoria in the early mornings of Valentine ’s Day in what seems to have been a tragic ending to his romance. She died at the scene having been shot by a 9mm pistol. The police reported that a 26 year old man will appear in court on charge of murder on Friday. The 26 year old Pistorius appeared at the Olympics in London last summer. Early reports suggested he may have mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder but these reports have been disputed by the police – witnesses heard screaming and shouting at the house around the time of the shooting. The police will oppose any application for bail.
Pistorious’ father declined to comment but did say “We all pray for guidance and strength for Oscar and the lady’s parents.” Steenkamp’s publicist, meanwhile, confirmed the model’s death and told the BBC “Everyone who knew her is in tears. She was an absolute angel, the sweetest, sweetest human being, a kind human being,”
Steenkamp had tweeted the night before her Valentine’s death “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?” she tweeted. “It should be a day of love for everyone.” Unfortunately, love was not forthcoming from the accused Pistorius, but quite the opposite.
